Pointers on Going on a Road Trip with Your Children

Perhaps you want to take your family down south where the sun shines a bit more often, or maybe somewhere north, to visit some historic castles and landmarks. If you have your own car, it makes absolute sense to go there using your ride as it helps you save on passage charges. Also, you get to manage your kids more and travel at your own pace.

While making a holiday journey with your loved ones is a great opportunity for you to spend time in each other’s company and bond more, it can also prove to be a challenging occasion. This is especially if your children are still aged below 10-12 years old. But with proper planning and clever handling, you will be able to enjoy your trip without much mishap.

Here are some suggestions which you may find helpful in organising your excursion down the motorway to the tourist spot of your choice:

  • Prepare your vehicle and passengers well
  • Doing this ahead of time lets you ascertain your family’s safety and overall peace of mind. With your four-wheeled transport, make sure that the engine and all components are in place and running smoothly. Don’t forget to add insulation at the back window, so that your youngsters won’t be subjected to the heat. Also, you need to explain to your kids what is about to happen and what they should expect while you are all in transit.

  • Bring provisions
  • When hungry, you and your little companions can just reach down for a sandwich or a pack of biscuits without having to pull over or search the area for a convenience store. Carry a well-stocked first aid kit, too. Have motion sickness medication on the ready as well. Tissue wipes, trash bags, sanitisers, and spray bottles help everyone, even the car interiors, stay clean.

  • Organise icebreakers and other activities
  • If you have an entertainment system in your vehicle, including an LCD screen, you can pop in a few DVDs that the young ones like to watch. Educational ones are great, since they get to learn something while travelling. Bring along toys, books, and flash cards. You can teach them a new song as well or play around in a scenic venue for a few minutes to work off your children’s stored energy.

  • Schedule breaks
  • Make stopovers every couple of miles or so, to allow them time to relieve themselves and stretch a bit. When you see an interesting shop, restaurant, or cultural attraction, do take a short visit. Everyone will love the spontaneity of it and it keeps the little ones excited. You also get to see new things and even acquire a few unique souvenirs.

Make sure that safety precautions, like the wearing of seatbelts, are being observed. See that your car can function well on long trips and in various weather conditions. If you believe you need a better vehicle, browse through the quality ones offered by John R. Ford and Sons and find one that is appropriate for cross-country journeys with your family.
